Nursing Home Abuse And Neglect

Sometimes abuse or neglect in nursing homes or assisted living homes is not so obvious. Abuse can take many forms. Abuse can be physical, mental or sexual or take the form of neglect. Signs of physical abuse may include, but are not limited to, skin tears, swelling, burns, broken bones, scratches, unusual bruises, cuts, irritation or tears around private parts. Neglect occurs when a care giver’s failure to provide adequate food, shelter, clothing, medical or dental care results in significant danger to the physical or mental health of an older person in his/her care. State and Federal law guarantee standards of practice for long term care facilities. Every resident has guaranteed “resident rights” which serve to protect them and set a standard for the industry.

Many nursing homes provide quality care. However, even one case of abuse is too many. We need your help to spot abuse and report it. If you think you see signs of abuse or neglect, take action to stop it. Report it as soon as you can to the long-term care ombudsman, State licensing agency and the Department of Health and Family Services. If you would like to make a complaint, click here.
